Alien: Isolation PS4 Game Review

Alien: Isolation is a Survival-Horror game developed by Creative Assembly (creators of the Total War game franchise). The game was released for the PlayStation 4 on October 7, 2014 with a $59.99 price point. It was also released on the Ps3, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. The game is an amazing experience that manages to place itself thousands of miles ahead of any other Alien game ever released.

The plot follows Amanda, an engineer aboard a spaceship who is investigating the disappearance of her mother, Ellen Ripley. When her crew decides to enter a space station named Sevastopol, they are separated by an explosion during boarding, and Ripley is isolated from her friends.  She must find her crewmates and escape the station.

There are other people on the space station, but they usually run away. If you are lucky enough to find survivors who aren’t scared shitless by some unseen force, they are incredibly hostile, and will shoot you. However, there is one survivor by the name of Axel, who helps Ripley, until his untimely demise. He is a pretty good character.

Now, let’s get to the Alien. The Alien is fortunately alone, as multiple aliens would make this game impossible. There is a level in this game where you must sneak around the alien, which had me constantly on edge. Now, you do get a revolver in this game, but it does almost nothing to the Alien. When you are around it, sneak – don’t run – or it will kill you almost instantly. If it sees you, good luck.

However, the Alien isn’t the scariest thing in the game. There are certain levels where you encounter androids called “Working Joes”. The androids are peaceful at first, but later become aggressive, killing you on sight. The Working Joes speak, but do not move their mouths when they do so, and they only have one expression which never changes, adding to their creepiness. The androids, unlike the aliens, can be killed. However, they take multiple hits before they finally die, and the minute they get their hands on you, they literally grab you, throw you on the ground, and kick you until your head is crushed.

You get multiple objects in boxes scattered throughout levels that can be used to craft certain objects. This is not the only way you can get objects; you can find weapons and useful tools in certain areas during some levels. The game manages to keep an amazing atmosphere throughout the entire campaign, even during the extra survivor mode. The story relies more on stealth than action, and often times, if you go in guns blazing, you will be killed. I had a wonderful time with it. This is a game that I would recommend for any survival horror fans. The game is difficult, so expect to have trouble in certain levels. If you’re an Aliens fan though, you’ll push through the entire game.
