Juggling Life as a Photojournalist, Husband, and Parent During E3
June 17, 2015My first Electronic Entertainment Expo assignment for Phoenix Genesis was almost 10 years ago. In 2006, I was a young carefree college student. I loved video games and was really excited to be part of history by helping my girlfriend Lindsay Berkovitz test mobility issues for the Nintendo WiiU. I knew that working in the video game industry was my lifelong passion.
Fast forward to E3 2015 and I’m back on assignment covering E3 with my now wife Lindsay Berkovitz. But now we are blessed with a wonderful daughter. However, those carefree days are over. I have decided to let my wonderful and talented wife take the forefront in her gaming career and am the primary caretaker for our daughter. While my wife was at the Xbox Press Conference, I got our daughter dressed and ready for school. While my wife was at the EA Press Conference, I took some time to keep up my top leaderboard rankings in Destiny on the PS4 for a few hours before I had to pick my daughter up from school. While my wife was at the Sony Press Conference in the evening, I made my daughter dinner and helped with her homework and put her to bed. Then, for a few brief moments, I charged up my camera batteries and packed my film equipment for the next day’s work on the E3 showroom floor.
Many younger game professionals and even game enthusiasts feel that you must abandon your gaming once you have children. I am here to tell you that you can have both. In fact, now you can have the joy of sharing your passion with your child, especially with such games as the new Last Guardian by Square-Enix or Skylander by Activision or the wonderful child-friendly games by companies such as Natsume and Nintendo. And at night, when my wife and daughter are fast asleep, I can marvel at yet another exotic weapon or piece of equipment in my Destiny arsenal.
