A Prize Fighter’s Approach to Social Media – Jab, Jab, Right Hook Book Review
June 18, 2014 0 By phoenixgenesis®We hear it all the time: if you have a business, you have to be on social media. This idea has gained wide acceptance. Just think of all the sponsored messages you see whether Facebook posts, tweets from Twitter or photos on Instagram. One thing is missing from these lunging attempts to grab our attention: most entrepreneurs and businesses have no clue how to use this type of media. Believing only that they have to be on all social media at any cost, they continue to plug their wares and services without any real result.
If only more people would listen to Gary Vaynerchuk. The business theorist and writer prides himself on telling entrepreneurial stories. His latest book, Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook details his discoveries about how to use social media to tell your own story. By studying each medium carefully, he details how to use each to gain attention in “a noisy social world.” His research leads him to the metaphor that gave this book its title: A boxer can’t win by just throwing the hook constantly – there will be no surprise when the other fighter sees it coming. If you set up the hook (in this case, the pitch for your business) by jabbing first (helpful, non-overt selling in your posts) you win trust. With that comes fans and customers.
As he makes clear, you cannot figure what works on a Tumblr blog will work equally well on Pinterest. With chapters on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Tumblr and emerging networks, he explains the results of his studies with excellent examples of businesses who use the medium well- and those who don’t. Reading his takedown of how Twitter uses Twitter (“useless”) is one of many treats awaiting the serious budding entrepreneur who picks up this book. Worth a read by anyone who is serious about selling on the Internet. His book is available on both Barnes and Noble and Amazon.
[Editor’s Note: To see how Mr. Burklow successfully utilizes social media to its full potential, check out his Twitter and Pinterest pages. He has over 2000 followers on Twitter with over 4000 tweets, so he picks up, on average, one follower for every two tweets. That is an impressive ratio. His Pinterest page is a work of art which is followed by over 1600 fans. You must see it to believe it. Don’t forget to repin some of his more interesting topics and follow him on both social media venues.]
