GoodReader for iPhone – iTunes App ReviewJuly 9, 2014
GoodReader for iPhone is a Productivity App made by Good.iWare Ltd. I am reviewing version 3.5.1. This app is available in the iTunes store. I give the app 3 stars out of 5 because we need proper margins, epub support and a universal app that works on both iPhone and iPad.
Remember when we had VCRs and they had so many options, but all you really wanted to do was record your movie and fix the time on the clock. Well, GoodReader kind of reminds me of that. It’s got so many bells and whistles that would take me a lifetime to master, let alone use, but all I really want to do is read a good book without experiencing eye strain. I find that PDFs still don’t look right on the iTouch size screen, but I do like that I can strip them into text.
The problem with all my text files, even the .txt ones I put into GoodReader, is that you only have left and/or right margin justification. Please, please, please, we need BOTH margins to be justified. I spent an hour tweaking all the font styles and colors and font sizes and formats and then took screenshots and compared it to the same book in epub format (which I converted from my .txt file) view in Stanza’s eReader and Stanza hands down won over for ease of reading. The one sized margin justification on GoodReader just makes the letters look all lopsided and squished together regardless of the font tweaking. Once you start reading on Stanza with the nice formatting, you just can’t go back to GoodReader.
Also, devs, what about epub support and flip page turning instead of the stupid scrolling? I like to feel that my page is a real page of a book and not that the entire book is one long scrolling manuscript. As the current app stands, I can’t stand to read books on it, but I do use it as a mobile backup for all my .txt files.
